Dreaming of our first home

We've lived in the South for a little over a year now and have decided that we're here to stay. All our family is here and it just makes since to us. So we've decided to start thinking about buying our first home. We are in our early 30's and by some peoples standards we are way behind in the normal american life. When Hubbs and I met 7 years ago we where both kinda wild and neither one of us was really ready to "make roots". Even when we had Izzy 4 years ago we where still in no real hurry to jump on the home ownership bandwagon. What we decided to do instead was make sure that we could be debt free and learn to live without credit cards. So we worked hard and last April we got to do the "We're Debt Free" scream. Which turned out to be very good timing since Hubbs lost his job just a few months later. All of which leads us to living in the south and buying our first home. We have been causally looking around to see if we could find an area that we really love. Well, we found it. We also found what could very well be our dream home. It's a home we could see living in the rest of our lives and I think we could make quite an amazing homestead out of it. We have 1 BIG problem though. Living on part time wages supporting a family of 4 for the last year has emptied our bank accounts to nearly zero. Also carrying massive consumer debt for so long did quite a number on our credit. So we're starting from scratch. We're aiming to save 30,000$ by this coming spring. Wish us luck! I'll post our progress.

Do you own a house? If so, how long did it take you to save for it?
