A few years ago, after the birth of my first child - Izzy, I had a sort of awakening. I started thinking about the world we live in in a much deeper way. After a little thinking Hubbs and I decided to change the way we live. We started going "green". We did all the normal "green" stuff. We started recycling, using cloth diapers, buying used instead of new when possible, being mindful of the second word in the common "green" saying "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". So we got good at that and then realized that we where spending TONs of green trying to BE green.
So I learned to coupon.
I'm proud to say I got pretty good at it. Then the economy started to hiccup. We realized that going to the store every week might not be an option as we struggled to keep enough food in the pantry till the next payday.
So we started stockpiling.
We started small and worked our way up to a 2 month food supply. And we did it for pennies on the dollar. Then baby 2 came along and our world flipped upside down. Hubbs lost his job 2 weeks before our very sick baby was born. After an 8 day stay in the NICU baby Elle came home. With nothing but our emergency fund and Hubbs part time job keeping us afloat we decided to move 2000 miles cross country to be near our family. Hubbs quickly got a part time job. While looking for full time work and realizing just how long it might take we decided to start stockpiling with a passion. We built up a 3 month supply of everything as quickly as we could. We soon realized how unprepared we where for anything other than a temporary money shortage. About 2 months ago Hubbs finally found a full time job and we decided it was finally time to start putting our desire to better care for ourselves and our future into action.
And now we've begun prepping.
We hope to take all the knowledge we gain and use it to set up a self sustainable homestead. Our 5 year goal is to be able to provide for 90% of our needs ourselves.
This blog will be about our adventures on the way to that 5 year goal. Thanks for visiting and I hope you have the desire to return again and maybe join in on our journey to living a truly self sustaining life.
